The Ford Motor Company recently made an exciting announcement. The American car company has invested in new tech businesses and amplified its Silicon Valley team.
“The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago,” said Ford president and CEO, Mark Fields. “We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury cars.”
Ford’s first fully independent car will be a Society of Automotive Engineers-defined level 4 vehicle. It will not have a steering wheel, gas or brake pedal—but then again, it doesn’t need them. The new car will be used for ride sharing and ride-hailing within geofenced areas.
