Ford engineers didn't just want to slice weight off the 2017 Ford Super Duty's body. They wanted to liberate mass they could reinvest elsewhere to create the lightest, strongest heavy-duty truck ever to roll onto a dealership lot.
Challenge, accepted.
The process started with a new military-grade aluminum-alloy body that contributed plenty of surprising added strength of its own while successfully trimming the 2017 Super Duty down. The reduced weight allowed Ford to design our strongest steel frame ever, a foundation cut out to handle 7,630 lbs. of payload and 32,500 lbs. of maxed-out towing like juggling packs of peanuts. They were the perfect complements to 440 horsepower under the hood and 925 ft.-lb. of torque.
Still, we couldn't help thinking there was more we could prove.
Fortunately, John Brenkus and the crew of Tough Science had lots of time to play with a crane, a 2017 Super Duty's high-strength steel frame, eight pickup trucks weighing about 4,700 lbs. each, and for good measure, all 13,000 pounds of a Tonka F-750 dump truck.
